Reflections on Mentoring and Motherhood

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

This year, I have had the privilege of serving as a mentor for the Python module at SheCodes Plus Brisbane. The module spans five weeks, with two sessions per week, and I also had the opportunity to mentor for the HTML/CSS classes as an industry mentor last year. Just two years ago, I was a student in the program myself.

As a mentor, I often have one-on-one sessions with my mentees. These meetings always move me because many of them are mothers. Despite their busy schedules and taking care of their homes, children, and jobs, they still find time to study and grow. It's inspiring to see their eagerness to learn and tackle new programming concepts. These women truly embody love and determination.

Yesterday was Mother's Day, and it got me thinking about my mother. When I was in high school and my sister was in elementary school, my mother would always wake up at 5 am to cook us breakfast, clean the house, and then go to work. She would be back around 5 pm to cook us dinner, do more housework, and ensure we had a stress-free environment to focus on our studies. Every day, she followed the same routine. At the time, I knew she was busy, but I didn't fully understand the pressure and responsibilities she had to bear at work and in her personal life. Now that I am older, I realise it was not easy for her. Every time I think about it, I am grateful for the sacrifices she made to provide us with a good life and still excel in her own career. My mother is my role model, my hero, and I love her with all my heart.

To all the moms out there, thank you for making the world a loving and nurturing place. Your hard work and dedication to your families and your personal growth serve as a shinning example for us all.
